Only the open-access national parks – namely Golden Gate Highlands, parts of the Garden Route and Table Mountain national parks (with the exception of Boulders Beach and Cape Point) – opened on Monday, June 1.
This follows the Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane’s announcement on Saturday (May 30) that public and private game reserves would be open for self-drives under Level 3 regulations.
Even open-access provincial nature reserves and game parks are yet to provide clarity on which parks will open, says Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson, Musa Mntambo. The province’s conservation management organisation notes that it will meet this week to discuss the way forward.
Travel News’s sister publication, Tourism Update, understands from a SANParks statement that the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy, will release a statement in due course regarding the opening of other parks.
